On13–14, June 2011, at the R.E. Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine the first Ukrainian-Swedish Workshop “New approaches to diagnostics and treatment of cancer” was held. Karolinska Institutet (Sweden) and Odesa National Medical University were the co-organizers of the Workshop. The Director of the R.E. Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology of NAS of Ukraine Academician Vasyl F. Chekhun made welcome speech. He emphasized that this scientific forum brought together specialists from different countries and expressed hope that it will receive annual event status and wished fruitful work and creative inspiration. The aim of the Workshop was to acquaint young specialists-oncologists with current developments in cancer research that contribute to the improvement of cancer patients diagnosis and treatment. Lectures and reports, which were made in the framework of the Workshop devoted to the most urgent issues of experimental and clinical oncology, were focused on the researches that are important to deepen the knowledge about fundamental problems of oncology and the implementation of scientific developments into clinical practice. 62 scientists from Ukraine and Sweden took part in the Workshop. Among the participants from Ukraine were young specialists-oncologists from following institutions: the R.E. Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Patho logy, Oncology and Radiobiology of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Institute for Problems of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the D.K. Zabolotny Institute of Microbiology and Virology of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University, the I.I. Mechnikov Odessa National University, Uzhgorod National University, Dnepropetrovsk State Medical Academy of Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Zaporozhye Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education of Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the P.L. Shupik National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education of Ministry of Health of Ukraine, National Cancer Institute of Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Ukrainian Medical Stomatological Academy of Ministry of Health of Ukraine. According to the program, participants had the opportunity to listen 4 plenary lectures, review and discuss the results of studies that were presented in 19 reports.
